  1. VANGAZI 2016

Vangazi is a city in central Latvia. It was formed in 1991 as a village for reinforced concret factory workers. The city is surrounded by conifer tree forests and has a small river called Straujupite. The original task was to redesign market and culture house squares and it was drawn up by Incukalns region town hall.

Vangazi has the biggest number of inhabitats in Incukalns region. It is highly multicultural and has always been a very independent place. My task was not only to redesign the physical space, but also to create new identity and overall feeling of the place.

The basic concept in a bigger scale is to connect both - market and cultural house squares with streel like city artery, creating an expanded frontal area of the cultural house. The artey is Vidzeme street, it is one of the central and oldest street in the city. On this street  are located the oldest buildings of Vanazi city, these are the first and  only brick buildings before concrete pannel houses. The concept that more applys to urban design is : -interaction of opposites-. It is derived from emplacement of both squares. Vangazi market square is located more closer to reinforced concrete factory and the dominant biotope is pine forest. Cultural house is located closer to the river and it's dominat biotope is river meadow. The opposites are - pine forest : river meadow, human made constructions : natural landscape, concrete : wood, geometrical forms : plastic forms.

Market square on a daily basis is not used very often. The site requires multifuncional design as it is only used on weekends. There is an interurban bus that comes and goes to the capital city and two other local cities. That makes the market not just a selling place but also an important representative space for the city and the cultural house.

There are concrete letters in different placement on the square, that says VANGAZI. It represents strong, independent side of the city and creates an attraction to teritory.

    • 7

Design elements are designed so that they would be functional weather the market is full of people or none of them. Concrete stools with solid wood elements can provide different kind of entertainment if are used with creativity not only as selling stools.

Redesigned  Vidzeme street. The main focus is put on soviet time architecture, frontal cascade view is open, it can be seen from the opposite side of the street and has it's own visual space.

The content of these flower beds goes in two parts. 1st part is the basic part, that is planted according to masterplan. 2nd part consists of free flower bed space for local inhabitat to use it as their small gardens. Of course, it's an option, not a certain thing.

Cultural house square. The entrance of the culture house is formed as a two step outdoor stage platform with appropriate lighting for events, plays or any other performances.  The main element of the square is a pool with low, bubbling fountain. It represents the beginning of Straujupite river. It begins as a small stream in the forest. The base of the pool is lined with tile in brown color, because the stream, due to irone ore, is in brown color too. P.s. This is my favorite piece from this project! )

  2. LANGERVALDE FOREST 2016

Langervalde forest is located in Jelgava, Latvia. It serves as an urban forest in the city and reaserch territory for Latvia university of agriculture students & profesors. Our task to explore and later give possible direction for forest's development came also from university.

The main goal was to bring ecological, social and scientific functions together into an urban forest.

The Langervalde forest is part deciduous, part conifer tree forest. The land cover mostly is old leaves from trees and thick, bushy under growth. In spring time the soil gets soggy. There are two amelioration ditches and a road that crosses the forest, dividing it into 3 parts.

The overall feeling of the forest is simple, light, welcoming ease.

    • 3

Proposed plan of the forest. The Concept - Higher than the ground-  Langervalde forest is divided in three main sections : 1.public activity zone, 2.individual activity zone and 3. silent forest observation zone. The spaces between ditches and road defines sections; you have to cross a bridge or road to enter a new zone. The concept - Higher than the ground- is part physical, part mental, because all design elements works in two different ways: to get a person above the ground physically and create peaceful, stuctured mental state of mind- relaxation. :)

The central place of the forest is future oak grove. The main and only element after oak trees is a wooden construction, that is made out of simple wooden stool modules. Symbolically it represents a hill. As a design element, the construction provides activity to climb higher, see wider. It creates feeling that it is possible to get on the top. On the right side, the lower level of wooden hill is intended tto be wider to create a stage for small celebrations or performances. The construction is seasonal and all the parts are collected in autumn to be stored. Every new seson the construction would have differtent form and arrangement. It would serve as an assignment for landscape architecture students. Construction is light and easily integrates in surrounding environment. It functions when there are no people around as good as there would be full forest of them.

This is the central path of the forest, it leads visitor trough all 3 zones and starts with main entry gates. There are two bridges on the path. The longest one is ~20 meters, it connects outskirts of the forest area, creating an illusion that there has never been a gap between outskirts of the forest area. Other bridge is made like an inside - out room. It has a window, doors and comfortable seats inside. Everything together creates simple space to take a daily rest. All these elements are designed in vertical beam style to reflect to the - Higher than the ground- concept and copy the vertical rhythm of the forest. Elements blends in the environment. At the end of the path in the silent zone, there is forest observation tower. It is possible to lie 40 meters above the ground and meditate together with tree top.

This is sport, outdoor activity route. It provides physical activities in different levels of intensity. There are few meditation/exercise platforms, designed climbing walls and two bridges as sport elements. Visitor can overcome the obstacles on bridge and ascertain his abilities or cross the bridge in the most normal way. All activities on this path requires some level of clear mind and concentration.

Comparing to other routes in Langervalde forest, this path is more tended to individual experiance and relaxation. The main elements are small wooden huts that hides between trees in bushes and have space for small group of people (1 - 3) and spiral bridge that is created in more untraditional style.  The path is connected to the central route.

  3. FROM TO 2015

From Zeppelin to Prisma project was created during my participation in Erasmus exchange program inTartu, Estonia. The task was to analiyze and explore banks of Emajogi river and it's connection with surrounding disctricts, define existing problems and improve possible development of the site. For full time students in Estonian university of life and sciences it was the final bachelor project in urban design subject. For me it was my first masterplan, visualizations, concept ...

The main goal was to create simple, natural, easy design for people who lives in  city districts that are one of the most industrial and private parts of the Emajogi river in Tartu. The territories, that are pointed out in the picture of the concept, will be equally valuable, well designed and maintained as the rest of the river coast in the center. It will keep it's natural character, shaping site’s overall impression as a physically interesting area, which ensures scenic values, constant medium sized feeling of mystery and feeling that you are in the right place.

The basic element that helped to create the design was an existing historical railroad tracks and shed like construction.
